Bowthorpe was developed largely from the 1970s onwards as a planned suburb west of Norwich, but a proportion of its housing still has functional chimney stacks that are now reaching the age where rebuilding becomes necessary.
Many of the semi-detached and terraced homes built during Bowthorpe's early phases used brick stacks with standard sand-and-cement mortar, which becomes hard and brittle over time and traps moisture rather than allowing it to evaporate. Where flashing has also failed, water ingress into the chimney breast is a common result by the time stacks reach forty or fifty years old.
