Bowthorpe was developed largely from the 1970s onwards, but the estate includes a good number of older properties and conversions where chimney stacks have been left in place long after the heating systems were modernised.
Because Bowthorpe was planned around cul-de-sac layouts with detached and semi-detached houses, many properties have quite accessible rooflines, which makes chimney take-down work relatively straightforward compared to tightly terraced street work elsewhere in Norwich. Stacks on these houses are typically single flue and brick-built, and once the fireplaces were decommissioned the stacks became a maintenance liability with no upside. Removing one and reinstating the roof covering properly will stop the slow water ingress that often goes unnoticed until it reaches ceiling level.
