Bowthorpe was built as a planned settlement from the 1970s onwards, and many of the homes here are now showing their age in the lead work around chimneys and roof abutments.
The housing stock in Bowthorpe is largely brick-built low to medium density homes from the late twentieth century, often with shallow-pitched roofs and box dormers. Lead flashings on these properties were sometimes installed to a lower standard during volume house building, and after forty or more years the lead can become brittle, the soaker courses fail, and step flashings begin to part from the brickwork. When that happens, water follows the line of the wall down into the structure.
